Requiem for Bueller’s Day Off

I’m sure many of you have seen and enjoyed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. However, many of you will not have seen Requiem for a Dream. It is not a happy movie nor does it have a happy ending. Rather it shows in rather a gruesome detail just how drugs of many different types can tear a family apart. Now someone has very artfully mashed up scenes from Ferris Bueller with the soundtrack from Requiem. I definitely recommend giving it a watch and if you haven’t seen Requiem for a Dream, then go out and rent it.

Hooray!!! My fraternity the Pi Kappa Alpha Alpha Tau chapter won songfest or at least won against the other fraternities on campus.(Not really sure on that point) Enjoy the video of their performance and laugh at the other fraternities Booing being drowned out by the cheers from the rest of the audience.

Unexpected Origins

Although I am was not an English major and quite frankly I am usually at a loss for words especially when writing, I have always been fascinated by interesting words an their origins. For instance brouhaha definitely doesn’t seem to fit in with the English language but there it is. Last night I ran across an origin for a word I had never thought twice about. The word teamsters I had always assumed was just some reference to them being a union. When historically teamsters comes from the term teaming in the 19th centure(possibly earlier, but I am not sure) which was defined roughly as “driving a cart for hire.”

It’s definitely been interesting reading some older books, in this case Bram Stoker’s Dracula, that have been annotated and end up teaching you something new.

So if you haven’t already noticed I have mostly finished moving to Wordpress from Moveable Type. I liked MT in the beginning, but as time went on I was getting more and more spam and having to spend more time trying to clean it all up. Unfortunately when you spend so much time clean it up there isn’t much drive left to actually write in it. I’ve still got a few more things to iron out, but nothing major….that I know of.

Although if anyone knows of a plug-in or seperate program that will let me show a random image from my Flickr photos I would definitely be interested.

with DVDs!!!

I am cleaning out my old entertainment center in preparation for a new tv and entertainment center. Unfortunately in the meantime they have taken over my closet. It may not look like a lot, but the shelves are deep enough for 3 rows of dvds to fit!!

As I lie here(yes I am that lazy that I am posting from my Wii ) unable to sleep………again, I just remembered that today is the one year anniversary of this blog. So I figured I should probably post something(I’ll add a picture of fireworks or something tomorrow). Since typing long entries with a single button remote on an on-screen keyboard can be a bit tedious, please forgive any grammatical/spelling errors and just chock it up to pure and unfettered laziness. I always had high hopes for this blog, that I would write in it a couple times a week and be filled a with all sorts of of and insightful commentary. Instead you have recieved whatever 6 randomized thoughts that I thought somehow belonged together at the time I wrote it. Even better is that I somehow managed 30 or 40 of them and no one developed cancer or died of brain rot reading them. In spite of the tone you think I am taking I am actually quite proud of this endeavor. Generally speaking I hate writing, especially when I don’t have to. Somehow when I was excited or disgusted enough with the subject matter, it didn’t seem like such a chore. Some posts didn’t even start off as posts, rather they started as a jumble of thoughts that scribbled were onto a post-it or typed into notepad. Well my arm is startting to get tired of meticulously aiming the remote so for Goodnight.

My baby sprung a leak

So I’ve had a busy week at work and just wanted to relax and do absolutely nothing this past weekend, so of course something went wrong. As if you didn’t already know I purchased my condo….well technically the bank owns it … and I absolutely love this place. It has an absolutely gorgeous southern view of the Salt Lake Valley. It has become my baby and it has been defiled!!! No I’m not really that upset about it, I was a little freaked out by this bubble that had suddenly formed on my ceiling sometime between Thursday and Sunday. Wondering what I had done wrong I poked a hole to get it to drain and hopefully dry out. Then I called the guy who fixes everything in our building and he suggested talking to my upstairs neighbor who’s washer, water heater and bathroom were all directly above the spot where the bubble had formed. It’s a good thing that he did suggest that because as it turns out my neighbor had turned off his washer faucets in preparation for getting a new washer. In the process had loosened the packing in the knob just enough that it began to drip into the wall. Not a large drip mind you, but over the course of 3 days that it took to make it down to me it all adds up. My neighbor is pretty cool and wasted no time in working it out to call his insurance company to get the damage repaired. So hopefully in the next week or two my ceiling will be back to the way it was with no bubble, holes and most important……..water!

This afternoon on my way back to the office from lunch I got a semi-frantic call from my mom. Now I am used to daily and sometimes hourly(Hi Mom! You know I am just kidding….right?) and can even be accused of doing it to her(like when she drives to St George, I like to know that she got there alright). Today, however, she called because the speakerphone on her cell phone, one of my old ones, got turned on. It’s a button on the on an odd area of the phone that if you hold it, it turns the speakerphone both on and off. Of course I am speaking retrospectively and I haven’t used that phone for about a year and change, i think. So just imagine about 10 minutes of randomly trying to tell someone to try different things, when you can’t see what they are doing and they can’t tell you how they did it in the first place. I eventually told her I would have to look in the manual and call her back with the correct instructions.

Now when she originally called she told me she had two things to talk to me about. Having dispatched the first I asked what the second was, assuming of course that it related to cell phone or computer related help. Not this time, apparently my mom went to the gym for a little while and when she came out she couldn’t find her car. She walked over to where she thought she parked and didn’t see it. So she walked around most of the parking lot looking for her missing car with no luck. Just as she was about to call the police she decided to walk back to where her car used to be and she noticed that the car was similar. It had was the same color, make and model. It also had the same pattern of dirt/soot that you always recognize is your car after a snowstorm and inside it had the same stuff that she had left in the car when she went to the gym in the first place.

Now this is an odd turn of events, because the car didn’t have the right license plates. So she used to remote to unlock the car and……IT WORKED! Apparently someone had switched her license plates with their own, thinking that no one would notice immediately. Unfortunately for them a long time ago my mom had another car that was Champagne colored and, it seems, nearly every other person in the state had one too. So instead of looking for your car it became more important to find the your license plate in a sea of Champagne colored cars. Getting back to the original story now, I asked my mom if she had checked some of the other cars too see if it was some kind of prank. Maybe someone rowdy teenagers had decided it would be a funny prank to play musical chairs with everyone’s plates. I struck out and she wasn’t able to find her plates. So to the bastard who decided that he didn’t want to renew his license plates, deal with his emmissions or needed to get rid of plates of a stolen car or something. I have a message for you:

License plate REMOVED has been reported to the police as being stolen and my mom has already replaced her plates with new ones! UPDATE: About 2 or 3 days later my mom got a call from the Provo police department informing her that they had her license plates. She has them back now and is very happy!

It only took a year
